Exploring Lorain County
An excursion to four family wineries in Lorain County offers a glimpse into the earliest days of the wine growing community there – as well as a glimpse into the future of the region.
As you explore, hear of the stories of one founded in the 30’s and still owned by the original family, or of another who recently took over a long-established cellar and is revitalizing its’ wine collection with the added bonus of craft brews. Still another began as a honey producer and now hosts special family gatherings and the last is a just opened boutique venue dedicated to preserving old world traditions with a modern approach.
As a plus, for history buffs, this year marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of Lorain County so there will be commemorative celebrations to explore.
Sip, savor, and enjoy.

All are owned by families passionate about their craft, yet each is unique in its own right. Some have been around for decades; others are new to the industry. Some grow grapes and only make wine from their farm, others source exceptional fruit from around Ohio and the region. They pour dry wines, sweet wines, fruit wines, and dessert wines. Several also have expanded into the craft beer business. There is a myriad of well-made easy-to-enjoy wines and craft beers along the trail: something to satisfy every palate.
Conneaut Creek Trail
These wineries are a part of Ohio’s newest AVA [American Viticultural Area]. The designation, by the Federal government after a long and complex process, recognizes the unique microclimates and historical significance of a grape-growing region. The three wineries on this mini trail are special places. Arnie Esterer, founder of Markko, was the visionary who first planted vinifera in northeast Ohio. Buccia Vineyards, started by Joann and Fred were among the first 25 in the state and their legacy has been carried forward with passion and success by Bill Holden, its present owner who expanded overnight accommodations and food offerings. Ken Tarsitano was also one of the first 25 wineries in the state that planted his grapes in the historic Hatches Corners and most recently added fine dining. The three, taken together, provide a perfect opportunity to enjoy great wine, lovely meals, and a truly memorable getaway experience.
