Claudio Salvador

Claudio Salvador came to Ohio via Virginia and Texas at the behest of Robert Gottesman of Meier’s Wine Cellars who had purchased several existing wineries as well as North Bass Island to manage their commitment to vinifera grapes.

In 2003 he partnered with a regional real estate developer and acquired Firelands Vineyards where his innovation showed itself again in the planting of several varieties, including Dolcetto and Malbec which had not before been grown in Ohio.  Under his leadership, Firelands has become one of the most respected wineries in the region as well as in the nation.  His peers have described him as a trend setter in both the fields of enology and viticulture.

Over several decades, Claudio has served on numerous boards and committees committed to the growth and development of a state wine grape and wine community. He has served as a mentor and advisor to dozens of both new and more established wineries and growers, freely offering support and guidance, all to help raise the quality of their products and to build a stronger reputation for the Lake Erie region at large.  He often presents at industry conferences, sharing his vast knowledge whenever asked.

Firelands is noted as a generous supporter of community causes, donating frequently to a myriad of worthy charities in and around the Lake Erie Shores and Islands region, often quietly and humbly accepting words of appreciation.

We are proud to induct Claudio into the Ohio Wine Hall of Fame.
