A Wine Trail - Lake Erie Shores & Islands Wine Trail-Northwest Ohio Discover the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Wine Trail. Brisk sea breezes and the moderating influence of our Ohio's own Lake Erie allows our vintners to produce grapes and make wine amid some of the country's most scenic vistas. Throughout this 'cool climate' growing district, historic vineyards and wine families who have farmed them for generations are complemented by new plantings of Rieslings and chardonnays established by dynamic entrepreneurs. Numerous soil types, deposited by years of glacial movements provide fertile ground for great viticulture, new and old.
Beyond great grapes and award winning wines, the region offers a myriad of other activities. Legendary amusement parks, spectacular sunsets, island escapes, the state's largest concentration of indoor waterparks attract families and empty nesters alike. As an internationally recognized 'portal' for birding, enthusiasts travel from around the world to the 'Wine Islands' to see nesting bald eagle pairs, track migratory birds from warblers to waterfowl as well as to enjoy permanent residents like the elegant egrets and great blue herons.
A Wine Trail - Lake Erie Vines and Wines-Northeast Ohio Along the south shore of Lake Erie, through the valley created by the mighty Grand River, atop the ridges carved by ancient glaciers and in tiny microclimates nearby, northeast Ohio boasts more wineries per square mile than in any other region. The tiny parcel of land also is home to well over half of the winegrape acreage in the state.
As the cool winds blowing over the icy lake slow growth of tender buds in the spring and the gentle warm breezes extend the summer season into fall, and the valleys collect cold frosty spring air, winegrowing families of the area celebrate their ability to grow some of the finest grapes anywhere in the nation. Hundreds of acres of rolling, lush vineyards, award winning wines like Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc, easy to enjoy Chambourcin and Vidal Blanc as well as local favorites made from native varieties draw tens of thousands of visitors each year for touring and sampling.
Plan a long weekend – or better yet a couple of getaway excursions to explore some of the country’s best preserved covered bridges, resort communities, antique shops, fine dining and family friendly eateries, unique museums, dozens of beds and breakfasts – and the sparkling lake itself – are all complements to the region’s star attraction: the wines and the vines of northeast Ohio.
Join us on the Wines and Vines Trail and discover for yourself all there is to taste, experience and enjoy.
